The G650GS’s single-cylinder is effectively a re-engineered version of the F650GS’s motor, however where the F650’s lump was built by Rotax in Austria, the G650’s was built by Lonchin in China. Boasting a capacity of 652cc, the engine has four valves with a double overhead cam design and fuel injection. Not sure what the fix from BMW is, well they don't have one. My riding buddy who is a darn good BMW tech plus owns a X-Country, mixed 2 cycle oil in a full tanks of gas on the bike to lub the injector. Ok it works and he has not had that problem again, what can I say.

I haven't ventured onto single tracks and the like. The seat on the X-Country is fine for 150-175 mile afternoon jaunts, which is about as far as I've had time to ride it at one time. The seat is pretty decent. While I wish it had more than a 2.5 gallon tank, it still provides a range of 150 or more miles. I've been getting between 65 and 74 mpg.

I have one and can highly recommend them. Fuel economy, as you say is top notch but tank size is a pain. There are also 2 versions, the 07-08 black one has an alloy rear subframe, the same as the challenge, the 09 has steel but has been lowered significantly. This makes luggage a bit of a pain, on top of the small tank.

Biggest failing is the size of the fuel tank. A friend of mine hired a G650 Xcountry in Morocco and we had to syphon petrol from the tank of my Tenere twice when he ran out of fuel. Nine litres even with a low fuel consumption of probably 22-23 km/litre just isn't enough to allow you to explore wilderness areas.
The fuel pump is sucking fuel from the main tank, creating a small negative pressure in the fuel line. That and gravity keep the main tank slap full until the auxiliary tank empties. So the auxiliary tank empties first. It's empty (and practically weightless) after about 75-80 miles, and the main tank is still full.
